The La Tordela winery is located in the municipality of Torre de' Roveri, at the heart of the Valcalepio winemaking region. The first historical documentation of the estate (of which a beautiful plan is preserved in the winery) dates back to 30th March 1790. The estate possesses 20 hectares of vineyards on the hills between the Serradesca valley and the Torre de' Roveri basin surrounding the winery where the proprietor's house is situated. The house was built in the 16th century and the facades were embellished in the late 18th century.
The recently-renovated cellar is fitted with modern stainless steel vats which enable us to produce wines of exceptional elegance and structure, after careful selection of the grapes and fermentation at a controlled temperature. The ageing and maturing area is especially important: it is equipped with French Allier oak barriques and 20hl barrels. The La Tordela winery currently makes Bergamo I.G.T. Merlot, Cabernet and Pinot bianco wines, and D.O.C. Valcalepio wines of the three types - white, red and moscato passito.
Valcalepio Rosso Riserva is only made in particularly favourable years.
The winery also has a farm, with a flock of giant Bergamo sheep and a boar farm.
Valcalepio Rosso is an expert blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, in percentages which vary according to the type of wine desired while remaining within the specification terms. The Valcalepio Rosso usually has a higher percentage of Merlot, while the percentage of Cabernet is increased in the Reserve.
Valcalepio Rosso is aged for 3-6 months in medium-sized barrels (20 hl) and is matured in bottles before being sold.
It is a more or less intense ruby red in colour, depending on the vintage and the land; the typical vibrant nose has clear fruit overtones of sour cherry and jams, with vanilla and spice notes underneath. Always harmonious on the palate, its tangy vein supports the after-aroma with its strong fruit and vanilla notes. The finish is persistent and well-structured, and distinctively rounded.
Valcalepio Rosso Riserva is aged for 12-24 months in medium-small oak barrels, and undergoes further maturation in bottles of 6-12 months before it is ready to be sold.
It is ruby red in colour with garnet highlights, and has a sophisticated, intense aroma with clear vanilla, liquorice, and sweet spice notes, and a backdrop of typically fruity sour fruit and jam. On the palate it is full and well-structured, and clearly rounded by the sweet tannins which make it a smooth, pleasantly drinkable wine. The after-aroma reiterates the range of stylish, mature perfumes with overtones of vanilla, liquorice, sweet spices and fruit. The finish is warm and pleasant with decisive and marked persistence.
These are both very modern wines, in conformity with consumer preferences for fruity, well-structured wines which are also smooth, intriguing, drinkable and easily adaptable to any time of day.
