Description

It was an innovative and pioneering spirit that led to the foundation of the Girlan Winery Cooperative already in the year 1923. These two characteristics are still the primary motivations of the Girlan Winery to this very day.

The Girlan Winery was one of the first winegrowers' cooperatives in South Tyrol to reimburse producers according to the quality of the grapes. Furthermore, it was one of the first wineries that established three different ranges of wine quality. In the year 1962 the legendary wine "Fass Nr. 9" (Barrel No. 9) was first bottled.

In 2006, the Winery opened an elegant and well-appointed new tasting room.

Today the Winery counts more than 240 committed members.

Our grapes grow on the rolling hills of the sun-drenched Oltradige region, where the soil is particularly permeable to water. Situated on ideal altitudes ranging from 400 to 500 metres above sea level, the soil here is enriched with the valuable nutrients necessary for the healthy growth of sun-ripened grapes. Due to its privileged climate, this area is able to produce great wines, a fact first discovered by the Romans. Today, it is our aim to express this special terroir through balanced wines. It is the magnificent climate and distinctive soil types as well as tradition and savoir-faire that make these wines so suitable for the enjoyment of wine lovers!

Our entire approach to work is based on a strong awareness of quality, and therefore we offer our customers superior products that have matured in a natural environment and through natural cultivation. Gentle vinification and selective maturation is the key to the production of elegant and well-balanced wines with a superb palate and aroma.

Our wines are conceived to be an expression of their environment and terrain. This refers not only to the climate and the soil, but also to tradition and knowledge, in order to reflect the unique ecological conditions of the vineyards.

With this aim in mind, our winery is built on tradition and experience, but without neglecting contemporary and innovative standards.

Our wines are kept in our historic cellars, where they are matured in stainless steel tanks, large wooden barrels and also smaller oak barrique barrels. In this way the vinification process can reveal the individual characteristics of each varietal.

Recently, our old barrel cellar was completely restored and partly adapted to a wine tasting cellar, which has since become one of the main attractions of the winery. With its good indirect lighting, clay plaster and wooden ceiling mouldings, this room is suitable for the presentation of the high quality wines that the winegrowers' cooperative has produced since its foundation in 1923. Within these walls, witness to a historic winemaking tradition, our great wines mature in fine oak casks until they develop their superior taste.
