Termeno sulla strada del vino

Description

Municipality in the province of Bolzano, home of the famous and much appreciated Gewürztraminer, a very aromatic white wine, Termeno sulla strada del vino (Termeno on the wine road or Tramin an der Weinstrasse in German) is a charming resort located in the "Garden area" of South Tyrol, at short distance from Lake Caldaro, nestled among the hills, embellished by regular rows of vineyards, orchards and immense lush forests. It is the ideal destination for those who love to practice trekking, mountain biking, combined to good food and fine wine.
The town's name is documented for the first time, in 855, as "Traminno", which probably derives from the Latin word "terminus" (limit, with reference to the boundaries between the territory of the Isarco and the Council of Trent). The discovery of a megalith in 1880, in the hamlet of Ronchi, testifies to the presence of settlements in these areas since the Stone Age.
Sites of Interest:
- the Parish Church of Saints Quirico e Giulietta, flanked by a bell tower, tall 86 meters, which is probably the highest in the entire South Tyrol region. The structure is in Gothic style and features interesting frescoes in the choir;
- the XI century Church of St. James in Kastelaz, with a fine Romanesque and Gothic frescoes. Famous is the so-called "Bestiary" in the apse, which represents half man and half animal figures symbolizing the deadly sins;
- the XIII century Church of Saint Valentine in the cemetery, was enlarged in the XV century and features a series of important frescoes;
- the Romanesque Church of San Maurizio in Sella.
