Andriano

Description

Andriano (Andrian in German) is a municipality in the province of Bolzano, set on the right bank of the Adige river, at the foot of Macaion Mount; it is one of the smallest towns of South Tyrol, surrounded by a beautiful untouched nature that invites you to enjoy long and pleasant walks or healthy outdoor excursions.
Both the archaeological remains and the place name (from the personal name "Andrius" or "Andraeus") reveal the Roman nomination in this area.
Andriano's social winery is the one with the long est tradition in South Tyrol: opened in 1893, still produces excellent wines.
Attractions:
- the Church of San Valentino, with XIV century frescoes and a valuable altar with representations by Anton Psenner (1864);
- Wolfsthurn castle, set in a lush chestnut trees wood, was built in 1280 by the lords of Andriano, on the ruins of a previous fortress. Today it belongs to baron Kripp and it is used both as a private residence and as a farmhouse;
- the ruins of Castelforte, partially hidden by vegetation, seem to watch over the underlying town of Andriano.
