Description

A hilly terrain composed of limestone, loam, and clay, characterised by a salubrious climate, refreshed by ascensional maritime breezes from Liguria. Airy and cool during the summer, harsh and dry in winter, lightly caressed by fog from the Po valley. Legitimate and only son of the great river and of Pavia, city of art and history, which together have infused in the land and in the people, cordial and hard-working, simple and genuine, the qualities of pride and culture, fertility and passion. It is the Oltrepo Pavese, when wines have been cultivated for more than three thousand years - "...the abundance of wine is evidenced by the casks, made of wood and larger than the homes" wrote Strabo (60 B.C.-20 A.D.). In the Middle Ages, probably when the castles were built, the quality of the wine in the zone began to increase.

The Oltrepo Pavese (antique Piedmont), a sea of vineyards furrowed by waterways, by towns of ancient origins and steeples which emerge from the hills in a splendid repetition and succession of colors, is comparable for its geographic configuration only to Champagne and to Burgundy. "Halfway between the North Pole and the Equator" as the signs along the roads up through the hills say; it is in fact on the 45th parallel, and here is where the longest harvest in Italy takes place: first the Pinot noir for sparkling wine is gathered, then the reds like Barbera and Croatina (the variety of the greatly appreciated Bonarda). In particular, The Pinot noir plays a prime role, used in sparkling wines and in the production of fine red wines for aging.

The family-run Torti company is situated in the triangle formed by Santa Maria della Versa, Montecalvo Versiggia e Rocca dé Giorgi, and is in an ideal position for the cultivation of vineyards and especially the Pinot noir grape. The Torti family boasts a long tradition of D.O.C. wine production. Even at the beginning of the century Giovanni Torti possessed vineyards on the hills where viticulture was particularly favourable. His son Enrico continued his work and his grandson Dino, the current owner, has perfected it. Later, the Torti company became larger with the acquisition of a new estate, the Casaleggio.

Today the family manages a vast piece of land entirely dedicated to the cultivation of selected grapes for the production of fine wines. The company is in constant evolution, dynamic, ever attentive to variations in the tastes of the clients - thanks also to the providential intuition, feminine of course, of Dino's wife Giusy and of their young daughters Patrizia and Laura. The company has completed the entire restyling of its production, having made several innovative choices in this area such as the San Bacchino wines, with labels and legend written in Braille.

Dino Torti, vinegrower in Montecalvo Versiggia, possesses today a vast estate entirely dedicated to the cultivation of selected grapes for the production of fine wines. Production D.O.C. of classic grapes such as Pinot noir, Riesling Italico, Barbera, Croatina, Moscato.

A cellar containing modern systems for the vinification, the maturing and aging of all wines, from the modern pneumatic presses to the large barrels, from the barriques to the ultra-modern machines for bottling and labeling, from the wine-racks to the "dormitories" where the wines repose and wait to fully express themselves. The products of Torti company are characterised by the loving care of those who have worked with wine for generations.

The company's boasts a Barbera dry and sapid, vinous perfume, and a Barbera aged in barrique, a Bonarda with ancient origins and a cool Riesling Italico; and of course the Pinot Nero vinified in white (either still or sparkling, or barriqued), vinified in red, and also rendered sparkling with the charmat or talento classico methods.
