Montecalvo Versiggia

Description

Town in the Oltrepò Pavese area, situated in the valley of the river Versa, which incorporates also the small stream Versiggia, Montecalvo Versiggia was one of the fiefs that had their own castle, mentioned in 1164 in a diploma in which Frederick I ceded the territories of the Oltrepò area to Pavia. In the XV century it was under the control of Beccaria and, once the last heir died, the fief was under the rule of the Dal Pozzo Family, at first, and of the Belcredi Family, later, that ruled until the abolition of feudalism.
Among the sites of interest, not to miss:
- The castle built in the XII century, rebuilt in the XIII and restored in the later centuries, is an imposing building in local stone, part of the defense system of the valley of the river Versa. It is characterized by a "U" shaped plan and a large basement escarpment. On the South side there are visible remains of a tower. Looking towards South-East, it is possible to admire the remains of the base of a conical roof.
- The Parish Church of Our Lady of the grape, dating from the XII century and situated on a small hill;
- The Parish Church of St. Alexander (XIV century);
- Parish Church of St. Joseph (XIX century), features a simple and austere look;
- The Museum of the Corkscrew.
