Canevino

Description

A small town with an important agricultural vocation, situated on top of the homonymous mountain, a watershed of the Valleys Scuropasso and Versa, Canevino is a beautiful hill located town, well known for its excellent wine production (in fact, it is part of the Consortium of DOC wines of Oltrepò). The town's name derives, probably, from the Ligurian dialect "can-ven" (yellow valley), a white mature grape variety.
The town was founded before year 1000 and in the XII century it became part of the fief of the Sannazzaro, Lords of the valley Scuropasso, then it passed to the Beccaria, the Visconti Scaramuzza, the D'Adda, and finally to the Barbiano of Belgioioso.
Canevino is a great departure point for memorable excursions in the surrounding environment.
The most interesting monument is the church of Santa Maria Assunta, raised to parish in 1692, of probable Roman origin, as indicated by the epigraph of a gravestone in local stone situated outside. Inside it preserves a fine Baroque altar, with an embroidered frontal altarpiece. Behind this altar it is possible to admire polychrome statues and frescoes depicting the Madonna della Guardia, protector of Val Versa.
