Description

The Belguardo estate is located in the Maremma region of Tuscany, on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano, near the National Park "dell'Uccellina", about ten kilometers from the coast.

Purchased by the Mazzei family in the 1990s, the estate covers a total of 70 hectares, including 32 of specialized vineyards, making it one of the most important establishments in Maremma. Having foreseen the estate's great potential and in line with their philosophy of improvement of the "terroir", the Marchesi Mazzei implemented an intense re-planting campaign, carefully selecting the grape varieties and clones. Along with the introduction of traditional varieties, an important research and development project was begun using an ancient local strain, found in the oldest vineyards of Scansano, whose origins are not certified.

Thanks to the excellent climate and soil conditions, which benefit from the nearness of the sea, the Belguardo estate has become a point of reference for the area and its wines have been amply lauded and well received in the world's principal markets.

Thanks to the latest acquisitionof an additional 40 hectares, bordering on the original property, the vineyards are now projected to cover a total surface area of 55/60 ha. To complete the project, a new and efficient wine cellar will be built on the Belguardo estate within 2008.

Located in the township of Grosseto, the property extends over a total of 70 ha, of which 32 are planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and other local varieties of ancient origin, currently being developed experimentally.

The entire surface area, whose altitude ranges from 70 to 130 meters above sea level, enjoys southern/southwestern exposure, with slopes of 10% to 19%. The soil is characterized by an elevated presence of limestone and sandstone rocks, with an important backbone and a texture that ranges from medium, with good water retention, to sandy soil with excellent drainage.

The plant density in the vineyards varies from 5,500 to 6,600 plants per hectare, mostly with spur cordon and Guyot training. Apart from the unique position of the vineyards, the microclimate is strongly influenced by the vicinity of the sea - 10 kilometers as the crow flies. In particular, there are strong thermals in the spring and summer.

The microclimate is characterized by low humidity, below average rainfall for the area and a high rate of evapotranspiration.

This exceptional combination of soil and atmospheric conditions permits the cultivation of very diverse strains of grapes, which yield concentrated, complex wines that are also extraordinarily elegant and aromatic.
