San Casciano Val di Pesa

San Casciano Val di Pesa

Description

The headquarters of the Consorzio del Marchio Storico -- Chianti Classico occupy a residence where Niccolò Machiavelli lived during his exile from Florence, San Casciano in Val di Pesa is the Chianti commune closest to Florence. Etruscan in origin, documented by several relics (as for example the Tomb of the Archer), during the second half of the XII century it was conquered by Florence and, during the XIV century it was fortified in order to protect it against the continuous incursions.
The Church of St. Pancrazio is an interesting example of Lombard architectural style: it has three aisles divided by pillars .
The Church of St. Cecilia is, probably, the most ancient church in the area, as it was already mentioned in a document by Charlemagne from 774.
The Church of St. Giovanni in Sugana, XII-XIII century, has undergone heavy restructuring in the following centuries.
