Rifiano

Description

Surrounded by vineyards and orchards, Rifiano (Riffian in German) is a beautiful town in the province of Bolzano, set on a hill of Passiria Valley, short distance from Merano and the Texel Group Nature Park. The town, rich in suggestive paths, preserves its traditional aspect and its charming atmosphere of ancient times.
The place name, sill documented in 1116, derives from the Latin "Rufius", probably the name of a veteran Roman soldier who hold these lands.
Attractions:
- the Sanctuary of Madonna Addolorata, in Baroque style, built around 1671 by architect Franz Delai. The first historical documents, in which the church is mentioned, date back to 1310. The main altar, by Bartlmen Grätl, is considered one of the most beautiful Baroque style altars in South Tyrol. The Pietà (XV century) and the baptismal font (XII century) are interesting too. Valuable XV century frescoes can be admired in the chapel near the sanctuary. The church, rebuilt in the second half of the XVII century, is visited by numerous pilgrims.
- the historic sawmill in Vernurio.
