Avelengo (Hafling in German) is a nice and picturesque mountain village in the province of Bolzano, located on the beautiful Monzoccolo plateau (Tschögglberg), near Merano, surrounded by a wonderful natural landscape with woods, pastures and a superb view on the mountain range of Tessa. The ski area Merano 2000 is the ideal destination for skiers and hikers, lovers of nature and outdoor walks.
The place name, probably derived from "haf" (maso or farm), is mantioned for the first time in 1170. The fascist regime imposed both the italian translation of the place name, but also the unification of the village with the nearby Merano. Only in 1957 Avelengo regained its administrative autonomy.
