Description

Palazzo Viceconte's ancient history is bound to events surrounding the Venusio family.
The Venusio family can be traced back far in history. Two gentlemen, by the names of Guido and Ferrezzano Venusio, appear in the records for the first time in 1197. They were contemporaries of Frederick I, emperor of Germany, also known as "il Barbarossa". It was his son, Henry VI, who gave the Venusio family the "giustizierato" of Basilicata.

The family moved to Matera around 1460 and 20 years later it participated to the Otranto campaign against the Turks thus gaining the favours of the king of Naples, Ferrante of Aragon. In the second half of the 16th century the family started the construction of the Palazzo. The building was completed by the second half of the 18th century, around the same time when Ottavio Venusio was made Baron. In 1797 the king of Naples Ferdinand IV nominated Giuseppe Venusio marquis.

Unfortunately, during the 19th and 20th century, Palazzo Venusio has slowly decayed. However, the last ten years it has been fully restored and has been brought back to its original splendour by the Viceconte family.

Recently renovated and with probably the best panoramic views over the Sassi and its surroundings, sleeping in Hotel Palazzo Viceconte means splendid hospitality in the captivating charm of a historic Palazzo.
