Rotondella
Description
A quaint and picturesque town in the province of Matera, Rotondella lies in a central location in relation to the historical and geographical boundaries of the ancient region of Siris. World famous with the appellative of "balcony over the Ionian sea", the ancient Rotunda Maris is located in an area inhabited since the Neolithic Ages, as evidenced by finds, recently brought to light. Well documented, in its uses and costumes, is the strong influence that the powerful colony of Magna Graecia Heraclea-Siris had on the inhabitants of the area. The town's current name is mentioned for the first time in an official document of 1261.
Not to miss:
- the Prison Tower are the remains of a watchtower built in 1518 by the Prince of Salerno, Ferrante Sanseverino, and currently is the seat of a historical archive and public library;
- the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, built in the XVI century and subsequently enlarged;
- the Rondinelli Palace (XVI century);
- the Albissini Palace (1770).
