Description

Land between the mountains ("intra montes" in Latin), Tramonti is a wonderful town of the Amalfi coast, set at the foot of the Lattari Mountains and surrounded by a suggestive bucolic landscape consisting of about 145 acres of woods, terraces cultivated with lemon trees, olive trees and vineyards, rich in springs, rivers, picturesque and moving corners in strict contact with nature. It is composed by 13 hamlets, scattered across the small plateaus: Pucara, Novella, Gete, Ponte, Campinola, Corsano, Cesarano, Pietre, Capitignano, Figline, Paterno Sant'Arcangelo, Paterno Sant'Elia, Polvica.
Local historians affirm that the ancient village of Tramonti was founded by the Picentines who were exiled by the Romans after the conquering the coastal areas. During the Middle Age it followed the events of the Ancient Maritime Republic of Amalfi, contributing to the economic and commercial fortune of the coastal town.
In addition to the excellent local wines, produced by authocthonous grapes, characterized by the scents and the aromas of this area, Tramonti is also famous for having contributed to the knowledge of the pizza all over the world, thanks to the natural vocation of its inhabitants for this delicious dish, cooked in their own oven together with bread and toasted bread.

Among the most important sites of Tramonti, we have to mention:
- the remains of the castle of Santa Maria la Nova, built in 1457 by Raimondo Orsini, prince of Salerno. It was fortified with ten small towers and seven square bastions. Inside there was a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
- the remains of the castle of Montalto, partially hidden by vegetation, on the top of Mount Montalto, between Tramonti and Ravello;
- the remains of the Chiunzi Tower, on the homonymous mountain pass, was part of the defensive system of the Republic of Amalfi, overlooking the agro-nocerino-sarnese area, the Phlegrean Fields, Naples and the Vesuvius;
- the remains of a rustic Roman villa, in the hamlet of Polvica;
- the Church of Sant'Erasmo, in the hamlet of Pucara, rebuilt between the XV and the XVI century on the remains of the ancient Church of San Sebastiano. Inside it is possible to admire valuable paintings from Luca Giordano's workshop and a cinerary urn;
- the rocky Chapel in the hamlet of Gete, dating back to the XIII century;
- the Church of Sant'Elia, in the homonymous hamlet, with a beautiful lava stone portal;
- the Church of San Pietro, in the hamlet of Figline, with Baroque style decoration and a fine tiled foor;
- the Church of San Giovanni, in the hamlet of Polvica;
- the Church of Ascensione, with a Romanesque style bell tower;
- the Church and the Convent of San Francesco, in the hamlet of Polvica, dating back to the XV century;
- the Royal Conservatory of the Saints Teresa and Giuseppe, dating back to the XVII century, where the famous concerto (a digestive liqueur obtained by the maceration in pure alcohol of several spices) was prepared for the first time.
