Senago

Description

A town located North-West of Milan, situated at 18km from this regional capital, Senago was once one of the most famous resorts of the Milanese nobility, confirmed by numerous villas in the territory. Situated in the middle of the Park of Groane, the settlement established in 1976, has obvious Roman origins "sanus aer" or "sanus ager," although before the Roman domination, the whole area was inhabited by Celtic. In the Middle Ages it was part of the fief of Desio and was donated in 1476 by Galeazzo Maria Sforza to Lucia Mariani. Later the possession passed to Tommaso Readino, to the Gallarate Family and on to Giovanni Manriquez, until 1779, when it was sold to the Marquis Pietro Secco Comneo.

Among the sites of great interest, worth of mention:
- The Church of Santa Maria Nascente, built in 1908 as a votive chapel in neo-Renaissance style from a design of Fausto and Giuseppe Valsecchi Bagatti;
- The former Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption in Senaghino, which features a simple plastered façade and a neo-Classical style interior with three aisles. The building houses a valuable painting of the Madonna and Child of the School of Luini and an XVIII century ciborium;
- The Chapel of St. Bernardino of Siena, dating back to 1458;
- The Church of Our Lady of Fatima and St. Rita;
- The Church of Saints Martino and Bernardo, whose interior features a fresco of the Virgin Assumption executed by a pupil of Bernardino Luini, a leading Lombard painter of the XV century, and altars in the XV and XVI centuries;
- The Oratorio di San Pancrazio, which already existed during the pastoral visit of Cardinal Borromeo in 1573;
- Villa Borromeo, the original building is of the XVII, even though it has often been remodeled and refurbished over the centuries: it is a private villa that dominates the historic center of Senago and features a very large park;
- Villa Po-Degli Occhi, an XVIII century building with the turret Belvedere;
- Villa-Verzola Monzini (XVIII century) with a large English garden, that today is a public park;
- Villa Ponti, built in neo-Gothic style with a large park, within which there are the ruins of an ancient tower built by the Visconti.
