San Gimignano
Description
San Gimignano is located on a hill dominating the Valley of Elsa; it was declared by UNESCO World Heriatge Site for the medieval architecture of its historic centre.
Etruscan and Roman in origin, San Gimignano made itself independent from the bishops of Volterra; then it was conquered by Florence.
It was crossed by Via Francigena and ti is entirely surrounded by walls; on the top of the hill there are two main squares: that one of Cisterna, a triangle surrounded by buildings, and that one of the Duomo, where you can find both the Dome and the City Hall.
The 14 towers of varying height are the symbol of the town.
San Gimignano is also known for the production of the Vernaccia DOC white wine and the cultivation of the saffron.
Among the most interesting monuments to see in San Gimignano we point out here the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino (Saint Agostino Church), the Chiesa di San Jacopo (Saint Jacopo Church), the Chiesa di San Bartolo (Saint Bartolo Church), the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary Assunta Collegiate Church) and the Rocca di Montestaffoli (Montestaffoli Fortress).
