Civitella Paganico

Description

Small town in the province of Grosseto, set along the Ombrone valley, Civitella Paganico was founded in 1928 from the aggregation of some hamlets, including Paganico.
It is located in an area inhabited since the ancient time by the Villanovians, the Etruscans and then by the Romans.
After the fall of the Roman Empire there was a gradual depopulation of the area, due to the spreading of marshy lands. During the middle Ages the first fortifications were built on the territory, being this lattger under the jurisdiction of the feudal Count Ardingo Ardengheschi, who was previously a functionary of the German emperor Enrico II. At the end of the XII-th century the territory of Civitella Paganico was subdued to the influence of the city of Siena that, at the beginning of the next century, reached the control of the village.
The remains of the medieval fortifications are still visible, such as the Monte Antico castle, the Casenevole castle and the city walls.
Among the religious monuments we have to mention the Abbay of San Lorenzo, in Romanesque style, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built between the XIV and the XV century, the Church of Santa Maria in montibus and the medieval Church of San Materno.
