Vigneti Pittaro was established in 1970 by Pietro Pittaro, the heir of a family of vine dressers with over 450 years tradition.
The vineyards cover a surface of 85 hectares, equal to a length of 400 kilometres of rows of vines, in the sunny plains of Friuli.
The Zona DOC (Controlled Denomination of Origin Area) is Le Grave ("the gravels") del Friuli.
The vineyard lies on alluvium, deposited 35 million years ago.
Below a 90 centimetres thick bed of soil and pebbles, there is gravel for a depth of hundreds of metres.
It makes a poor soil, draining and arid, very suitable for vine growing.
Referring to the vine an old saw says: "Make me poor so that I will make you rich". This becomes true for Le Grave del Friuli.
The winery includes Ronco Vieri, a farm of cru vineyards in the very restricted D.O.C.G. area of Ramandolo, famous for its excellent and rare wine, called Ramandolo after the name of the production area.
Ronco Vieri produces other superb wines: Picolit, the most prestigious wine of Friuli, and Refosco dal peduncolo rosso.
The cellar is housed in a modern design building harmoniously integrated into the environment, whose beautiful architecture meets function and technology.
The building's wooden roof covers a surface of over 3000 square meters.
The cellar is equipped with 75 stainless steel large casks, five large wooden barrels and 145 small wooden barrels (barriques), two refrigeration plants and a bottling plant.
We also have a fully equipped laboratory for chemical analysis. In the guesthouse, a large villa inside the estate, there is a second large cellar, dedicated to the production and maturation of Talento (sparkling wine made by the traditional method used for Champagne).
This underground cellar is equipped with sophisticated machines for refrigerative disgorging.
A collection of old instruments and machines used for the production of sparkling wine is exhibited. We produce 40.000 bottles of Talento per year. The estate's total production of wine exceeds 1.200.000 litres.
