Povoletto

Description

The town's name probably derives from the rich presence of poplar trees (Populetum) or grassland (pabuletum). Municipality in the province of Udine, located near the river Torre and the stream Motta in Savorgnano, is famous for the cultivation of vines and the production of fine wines, the presence of large farms and its local handicraft. Departure point for memorable trekking excursions, like the one that reaches the castle of Motta.
The discovery of items dating from the Roman period and the discovery of an ingenious system of water canals. evidence that there was a small settlement in the area during the period of colonization by the Romans. The town is mentioned for the first time in a document of the first half of the XIII century. The area was linked to the nobles of Savorgnano, of which one of their representatives, a certain Rodolfo, appears to have agreed with the Count of Gorizia against the Patriarch of Aquileia. This choice led to the loss of the feud, that was ceded to the Colmalisio Family, but several historians do not agree with this explanation. The subsequent history of Povoletto shares the same fate of the other localities of the entire region of Friuli.

Not to miss:
- the Church of San Martino in Salt, erected in the XVI century, where previously was located a pre-existing building severely damaged by an earthquake. It submitted several extensions and alterations in the XVII and XVIII centuries and was partially demolished in 1961 to be rebuilt soon after. The interior preserves altars, frescoes and works of art, but none can be considered originals of the old building;
- the XVII century Oratory of Sant'Eurosia in Marsure di Sopra, a small building with a simple façade, a gable interrupted by two rectangular windows and a central crescent located above the main entrance. Inside it features a beautiful altar decorated with marble statues, depicting the Annunciation;
- the XV century Church of San Pietro in Magredis;
- the Castle of the Motta in Savorgnano del Torre. Of the entire castle, which dates back to the VII century, there are only few remains, hidden in a dense forest on the summit of a hill;
- the Domus Magna of Belvedere, which was built in 1476 and belonged to the Counts Partistagno;
- the Villa Mangilli-Schubert in Marsure di Sotto;
- the Villa Zanardi-Landi in Marsure di Sopra;
- the Villa Mangilli in Savorgnano;
- Villa Savorgnan.
