Description

This is the heart of the Grave Friuli DOC, where the soil is referred to as "magredi" and the weather characteristics are extremely favorable to winemaking.

The "magredi" are extensive deposits of pebbles and stones, transported to the Friulan flatlands by the Meduna River while it streams down from the Pre-Alps.

These smooth and round rocks make up most of the soil and provide unprecedented drainage for the local significant rainfalls. The drainage is so efficient that over time the typical dryness of these lands gave rise to an unusual ecosystem able to survive with almost no water retention.

The winemaking conditions here are truly ideal, especially considering that the hot summer days are followed by cool, breezy nights and the resulting temperature excursion contributes to create incredible aromas in our grapes.

Vineyards occupy 87 hectares (215 acres) in the Grave Friuli DOC.

The name "Borgo Magredo" is derived from a very ancient settlement that dates back to the Middle Ages.

A famous mosaic from the Romanic Cathedral of Santa Eufemia in Grado inspires our company logo. Mosaics are as much a symbol of Friulan culture as viticulture is and Spilimbergo has one of the few active Italian mosaic schools.

Our winemaking philosophy is straightforward: In our wines we try to respect everything that our soil and climate lend to the grapes. Vinification is carried out with the utmost respect for the natural aromas and flavors of our fruit.

In order to achieve this goal, we utilize highly specialized machinery and technology, with the main purpose of safeguarding the varietals' characteristics.
