Vicchio

Description

Vicchio is set on a hill, at the boundary between the Mugello area and the Val di Sieve, in an area inhabited since the Etruscan period, as many remains of that period testify. The village, however, developed during the Early Middle Age around parishes and castles built by the Guidi counts. In 1324 the Florentine Republic fortified the village: since this moment Vicchio experienced a period of economic growing. Finally, two important protagonist of the Italian Humanism and Renaissance were born here: Giotto and Beato Angelico.
the Parish church of San giovanni battisto, whose original structure is dated back to the XIV century, was rebuilt several times during the following centuries. Headed by a Renaissance style colonnade. It holds interesting 16th century paintings: Madonna with Child and Saints John the Baptist and Sebastianoby Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio, and Madonna of the Rosary by Alessandro Fei.
We also suggest to visit the Sacred Art and Popular Religiousness Museum and Giotto's birth place, in the hamlet of Vespignano, near the Church of San Martino.
