Vernole

Description

Vernole is a charming town of the Salento Peninsula, on the Adriatic Sea. Its history is handed on through stones, from the menhir to the "specchie" (tumulus of stones), from the "pagliari" (stone buildings) to the Basilian cave churches. There are also a lot of fortified farms: during the XIV century they were the centre of the agricultural activities of the area; they were equipped with hypogeum olive presses, mills and barns.
Acaya is theunique example of fortified town in the South of Italy.
Cesine is a damp area where there is a beautiful naturalistic oasis, with various vegetation and many peregrine birds and sedentary ones.
Do not forget to visit "Palazzo Baronale" (XVIII century), the "Palazzo Baronale Romano" (XVII century), the "Palazzo Baronale Saraceno" (XV-XVI century), in addition to the wonderful churches of this town.
