Spongano

Description

A small settlement inhabited since the Old Ages, evidenced by the traces of megaliths scattered around the area. The name derives, by some, from the word "sponge", for the absorption capacity of the ground, whilst, for others, from "spolium", ruins, referring to the first inhabitants, survivors of the destruction of the nearby cities of Castro and Vaste.

The first certain reports of the existence of this settlement are dated just after year 1000 and up until 1806 (year of the abolition of feudalism in Europe), Spongano was ruled over the centuries by different feudal families.

Regarding the monuments of historical interest:

- the dolmen "Piedi Grandi" , located in the Le More area, a megalith tomb built of two side slabs, approx. 70 cm high, covered by a square shaped slab 110-120 cm long;

- the Mother Church of San Giorgio, edified in late '700 was enlarged during the XIX century during the construction of the two aisles. The inside is embellished with splendid altars, a Baptistery and large wooden choir stall;

- the Clock Tower was built in 1768 with the function of a seat, where the local Representatives could get together to discuss the public matters;

- the Chapel of the Immacolata, which was built in XVII century and features a one nave building with a simple façade in stone of Lecce, famous for the a valueable altar preserved inside.

Not to miss: the Baron's palace, built in '500, and partially destroyed in XVIII century, which features a lavish façade in Baroque style.
