Montelanico

Description

Small town in the province of Rome, located in the valley of the Mounts Lepini, Montelanico was probably founded during the Middle Ages, around year 1000, although the name has Roman origins and references to the famous noble family of Metelli that, in these areas, owned a large land holding (the "fundus metellanicus"or "metellanicensis"). The earliest records are dated 1154. In 1184 the Castle of Montelanico was sold to the Counts of Ceccano, who kept it until 1428, when it was ceded to the Counts of Segni. In 1640 it was resold by Carlo Conti to the Barberini Family and in 1722 it became a property of Don Camillo Pamphily Aldobrandini.
Sites of Interest:
- the remains of defensive walls;
- the remains of the Roman era;
- the Castle of Collemezzo;
- the Medieval Town Centre;
- the Church of St. Peter the Apostle with its single nave plan with four side chapels, in which it is possible to admire a beautiful painting by Vincent Camuccini, depicting the Madonna del Soccorso;
- the Church of St. Antonio Tigri;
- the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso.
- the bronze Fountain in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, created by sculptor Ernesto Biondi of Morolo.
