Seaside resort on the Versilia coastline, Forte dei Marmi was founded during the Renaissance period, at the end of the road used by Michelangelo Buonarroti for the transporttion of the marble blocks from the Apuane Alps. Infact the first building was the "Magazzino dei Marmi" (Marble Stock), built by Cosimo dei Maedici in 1618, still visible today.
Famous resort since the first years of the XX century, hamlet of the town of Pietrasanta, it became an autonomous town in 1914.
The "Fortino" is the symbol of the town of Forte dei Marmi; it is a fortress built in 1788 by Leopold I of Lorena, in order to defend this area and to encourage the urban settlement.
