Favara

Description

Favara is a town in the province of Agrigento, famous worldwide for a delicious Easter cake, the Easter Lamb, prepared with almond and pistachios pastry; it is located 10Km from the capital town, at the foot of the Mount Caltafaraci. The first human settlements date back to the Copper Age, evidenced by some ceramic finds unhearted in Ticchiara area; other artifacts, especially tombs, reveal that this area was inhabited also in the Bronze Age. It was a Magna Graecia colony (remains of an ancient fortification in Caltafaraci area) and, later, a Muslim domain (the place name, in fact, derives from the Arab word "fawwara", meaning "source"). Many "casali" and the Chiaramonte Castle were built under the Norman domination.

It was recently refurbished and today houses cultural events and art exhibitions.
