Crispiano

Description

Crispiano is situated inland, at only 16km North of Taranto. The territory of Crispiano is surrounded by a series of hills of which the highest are near to the border with Martina Franca.
In the National Museum of Taranto, in an apposite room, the "Tomb of the Tumorali" is conserved intact, found in the territory of Crispiano in 1917, that prove the presence of human settlements since the Prehistory here.
At the times of the Magna Grecia the area was intensively inhabited. A lot of evidence is supplied from the exhibits found in the funeral chambers of important inhabitants of the time that are conserved in the same museum, known as the "Gold of Taranto" collection ("gli Ori di Taranto").
Crispiano is called the "City of the 100 manor farms (masserie), due to the large presence of them throughout its lands. Its economy is based on a flourishing agriculture, the production of olive oil and farming, and now is orienting towards wine and food (enogastronomia) and tourism.
No to miss the "Tower of Cacace" (Torre Cacace), which was built by the Commander Carlo Cacace as his personal Family's Chapel in the early '900 and has become a historical site of the town
