Calvi Risorta

Description

Calvi Risorta, a village located in the province of Caserta, houses the archaeological site of Cales, ancient Roman colony. Founded by the Auruncans (an Italic population), it was conquered by the Romans in 335 BC; then it became an Episcopalian seat until 1460, when Ferdinand I of Aragon sold it to Capua. Rich in Archaeological and architectural monuments, it is a very charming town. Many anchoretic (mostly inaccessible) tombs were found here, as for example the Saints' grotto, with votive frescoes dated back to X-XI century, and the grotto of "Formelle", with a beautiful frescos of Our Lady (XI-XII century).
