Description

Geography has been quite generous with Romagna and with good drinking lovers. In this land, winters are mild and spring comes soon. The torrid summer days are softened by the sea breeze, while the sun light reflected on the Adriatic Sea creates a greater brightness which felt in the internal areas as well. Furthermore the Apennins make an efficient barrier against the stinging rain coming from the Atlantic Ocean. Therefore if you take all these elements into consideration, you'll understand why the majority of this region meets the ideal conditions for grapevines' cultivation. And it is here, in the very heart of the Hills at the south of Via Emilia (the ancient Roman Consular Road) that sits the wine farm "Poderi dal Nespoli" whose extension is about 50 hectares.

The history of "Poderi Dal Nespoli" begins at the end of the Great World War when the Ravaioli brothers, in the whereabouts of Cusercoli, opened up an in , with lodging accomodations, and where they sold their wine production. Business started and went on quite well from the very beginning; this was both due to the closeness to one of the most important valley's market, than to the fast growing of wine request even beyond the river Bidente's limit. Business continued to flourish up until 1987 when Valerio and Fabio Ravaioli, together with Gianni Romanini decided to give business a whipping change, founding at Nespoli (a village near Civitella di Romagna) the wine producing firm "Poderi Dal Nespoli": they created it on the remains of a Master's Villa built at the beginning of 1900. What they had in mind was to offer to their clients a line of superior quality wines only, strictly connected with this area, which is considered one of the most typical and prestigious for Romagna's wine-making.

This of course was a very ambitious project, but it didn't stop the three partners, well aware of the potential they had at their disposal.

The perfect orientation of the farm laid just half way (50 km) between the Apennins and the Sea, could easily benefit of a few different factors. First of all, the growing angle of the slopes facing the sun, lights up more brightly the grapes rows; during the day, therefore, the temperature gets higher to lower sensibly during the night, when it is always fresh. This a fundamental process, and the movement of the river Bidente flowing close, "always watching, without ever touching the vineyards", incomparably helps to make it possibile. Such a thermal excursion advantages all the production and it is basic to keep the bouquet and the right degree of wine's acidity.

Furthermore the farm is distributed over two valleys - Nespoli and Predappio, being characterised by muddy ground (more malleable) at the West, and by clayey ground (more consistent) at the East; such a peculiarity allows to offer some products somehow different. Moreover, the underground enriched with gravel, carries out a further activity of thermal regulation, releasing during winter time all the heat accumulated during the summer. The favourable location, finally, far away from urban centres of great dimensions, guarantees an almost total lack of atmospheric pollution, reinforced by a moderate use, and exclusively with preventive purposes, of any kind of chemical treatment.

"Prugneto", "Santodeno", "Castellina", "Le Coste" and "La Rimessa" are the farms that supply the grapes from which a rich selection of Poderi Dal Nespoli's wines is obtained (grapes variety is quite large - Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon, Trebbiano, Chardonnay and Albana, and this is due to the fact that all the wine-making is made with the farms' grapes).

The process of wine-making traditionally includes grapes-rasping, win-pressing and fermentation inside steel tanks or in barriques and finally wine-ageing in the Villa's cellars, before proceeding to final bottling. Here is where come out important labels such as "Borgo dei Guidi" and "Il Nespoli" among the red wines, or "De la Rimessa" and "Da Maggio" among the white wines; and let's not forget the "Passiti" (raisin-wines), such as "Bradamante", and Grappa (Brandy).

For several years now, the production could also benefit of all the experience of Giuseppe Caviola, from Piedmont, by now "bewitched" by Romagna, together with his talented team of technicians belonging to the "Vino Veritas". This contribution has been fundamental and since the new generations have become a part of the management, a major attention has been given to the evolution of the taste, the changing of the habits, thus allowing a continuous evolution of the product and techniques sharpening.

This unceasing renewal, born from a long time passion for wine, has taken the trademark "of the woodcock and the glass" on the tables of Europe, United States, Japan and on the pages of the most important field magazines and guides.
