Description

The first news of Tagliolo go back to the end of the first millennium, when in March 976 Othon I grants the feud of Monferrato to the Marquis Aleramo I. Across the centuries Tagliolo knew various feudatories, among whom the Spinola and the Doria, passing from the Republic of Genoa to the Duchy of Milan, to the Empire and to Spain.

In 1498 Tagliolo finally becarne a possession of the Gentile family, which obtained the title of Counts of Tagliolo.

In 1750, following the marriage of Teresa Gentile with Costantino Pinelli, the feud of Tagliolo went over to the Pinelli Gentile family, with the title of Marquis of Tagliolo.

The oldest part of the castle is the bottom of the tower, which goes back more than a thousand years. The upper part of the tower, now 38 metres high, was built between the 15th and the 16th centuries. The castle was restored at the end of the 19th centry by the Portuguese architect De Andrade and today, thanks to the care of the proprietors, Marquis Pinelli Gentile, it is very well preserved.

In Tagliolo Monferrato the culture of the vine and the production of quality wines are secular traditions, recorded from the 15th century in the accounting books of the castle.

Nowadays the cellars of the winery of Castello di Tagliolo are considered among the most famous of the Alto Monferrato, and their wines, well-known by wine-Iovers and gourmets, have obtained important national and intemational prizes.

Those wines come from grapes accurately selected only from the vineyards of the estate.

The array of wines includes the three "denominazione di origine controllata" peculiar to the region, the Dolcetto d'Ovada, the Barbera del Monferrato and the Cortese dell'Alto Monferrato.

Furthermore, the Castle produces its own wines: the Castagnola, the Rosso Nobile (Barbera - Cabernet), the Metodo Classico, the Spumante Brut, the Gentile, the Bianco Nobile (Riesling - Pinot - Chardonnay), the Grappa di Dolcetto, the Passito di Riesling and the In...chino.

AlI those wines are produced in the centuries-old cellars of the Castle and aged in the old Slavonia oak vats.
