S'Ortali 'e Su Monti archaeological area - San Salvatore (Tortolì)

A short distance from the Orrì beach, a famous tourist attraction in the Ogliastra Area on the rolling granitic hills of the immediate hinterland, in the locality of San Salvatore, is a vast archaeological complex that offers a rare opportunity to enjoy e vacation combining the seaside and a nature with history and archaeology. To get this site, about three km from the town of Tortolì, take the SS 125 state road, head for Barisardo-Cagliari, and turn left onto the road that leads to the Orrì coastline. This area has sporadic but important testimony of the pre-nuraghic period and more significant traces of the nuraghic period. Dating to the Late Neolithic (4000-3200 BC) are Domus de Janas that was surely part of a vast necropolis, and some menhirs, two of which are still standing, at the nearby giants tomb. Furthermore, the remains of what was probably a megalithic circle may attest to the use of the site in the Copper Age, at the time of the so-called Monte Claro Culture (2700-220 BC). The nuraghic area includes a complex tholos type structure, a village with dwellings and a giant's tomb.
