The Brianza Comasca
Around the towns of Cantù and Mariano Comense, now modern and important industrial centres (most of all for woodworking), the territory still shows the traces of its history. The Romanesque group at Galliano, near Cantù, is one of the most important in Lombardy, while the villas at Lurago, Alzate, Anzano and Inverigo are evidence of the "invention" of holidays in the eighteenth century. Some of the more modern buildings are also worth seeing - look out for the excellent examples of contemporary architecture at Alzate and Novedrate. And despite the dense urban settlements, areas of natural beauty have also been preserved.
