The Rilke trail
-
The most beautiful panoramic trail in the city is dedicated to Rainer Maria Rilke (Prague 1875) the Austrian poet of Bohemian origin who at the beginning of the last century was the guest of Princess Maria della Torre e Tasso at the family castle of Duino.
The walk, of about two kilometres, goes along the ridge between the bay of Sistiana and Duino, and follows the spectacular rock formations which rise to a height of 80 meters and plunge down to the sea. It gives truly awe-inspiring view which includes the Gulf of Trieste, the extra-ordinary coastal environment of the cliff s and a special botanical mix. In fact, continental flora here meet their Mediterranean counterparts, clinging tenaciously to the rocks. There are also well-marked remains from earlier periods of conflict. The trail begins by walking along the camp-site behind the area above the bay of Sistiana, where there is also an information centre, or by leaving from the United World College in Duino (the garden of which, although accessible, is private property).
