Concert locations
In Ravello concerts are performed at Villa Rufolo (entrance from main square) while in Scala at the ancient Annunziata Church, nowadays Lorenzo Ferrigno Auditorium (Campidoglio hamlet). The distance between the 2 sites is about 3 km, 35' on foot and little less than 10' by car. Villa Rufolo was built in 13th century by one of the wealthiest families at the time in Ravello, the Rufolo family, which was at the height of a commercial fortune. Boccaccio mentioned this family in his writings of the second day of the Decamerone. The Villa, in the course of time, passed through many hands until 1851 when it was bought by Sir Nevile Reid, a Scottish botanist. He restored the Villa to its antique splendour, adding rare plants to its gardens facing the sea. It was in this storybook atmosphere that Richard Wagner, who visited Ravello in May 1880, had the inspiration for the scenography of the Parsifal's second act. In the cool spring and autumn evenings concerts are held inside the Villa Rufolo palace. At the end of May and in June the concerts are held outside in the garden, in the nearby of one of the ancient towers. In case of bad weather condition concerts are held inside the palace. The Annunziata Church in Scala, of Romanic origin, between the 12th and 14th century became part of a Dominican monastery. It was restored in the baroque period. From the Church you can see a beautiful view of the town hanging over the coast and, in the clear weather, of the Salerno Gulf up to Cilento mountains, with Paestum and Palinuro Cape.
