The Carso landscape offers many ideal trails for horse-riding and ponytrekking.
Lovers of riding through a natural landscape or of hill trekking will find numerous opportunities throughout the area, from those for tourists to those for the more inquisitive and adventurous.
Among the most popular trails for ponytrekking are the stretch of the Via Gemina which connects Malchina to Prepotto, the trails in the Natural Reserve of Monte Lanaro at Monrupino, and the Muggesana trail.
Trieste can boast a long-standing riding tradition, as seen by the large number of riding schools, clubs and private stables which all encourage this pastime. Various disciplines are followed: show jumping, vaulting (a sort acrobatic gymnastics) and dressage, that most elegant demonstration of the synchrony between horse and rider. There are also team games such as horse ball or four-in-hand, which involves driving a carriage.
Horse therapy is now an interesting part of young people's experience. It describes the initiative which sees the horse transformed into a four-legged therapist, to offer support to the differently-abled.
