The Carsic Marriage

Every two years the Nozze Carsiche, inspired by a nineteenth century nuptial ceremony, is performed in Monrupino. This series of ancient rituals begins on the last Tuesday of August at the local fair. Traditional dishes are prepared and eaten to celebrate the passage of betrothed couples from their unmarried status. The Friday is serenanding day (podoknuce). On Saturday the bride carries her "corredo" (bed linen and other sewn cotton and lined items) on a cart pulled by bulls to her new home. On Sunday the religious and cvil wedding is formally celebrated in the small stone chapel of Rocca di Monrupino. The bride, groom and invited guests are all wear hand-sewn traditional dress recalling those once worn by the local farmers. After a snack of zvacet (stewed veal) and Carsic Terrano wine, the cortege, led by a piano-accordion palyer, walks to the Casa Carsica where the ritual of the bride's delivery takes place, before the wedding reception proper begins.

Point of interest
The Casa Carsica di Monrupino is an ethnographical museum created in a traditional dwelling restored in 1968 and furnished with original pieces dating from the nineteenth century. It fits in well with the picturesque village on the plateau that still has the characteristic limestone cottages set in a circle with their panelled roofs (lestricali). Monrupino is the smallest district with its own village council in the province of Trieste.
