The Taverna
After an intense work of restoration carried out by the Mountain Community of the Ufita, la Taverna delle Monache, located in the district of Ponte Gonnella, in the town municipality of Ariano Irpino, is newly accessible to the public and offers an important tourist information center.
Taverna used by the Knights during the Crusades as a resting spot for themselves and their horses. Later it became a postal station, and thereafter a distillery. Taverna is located at the center of the main routes of communication, the Via Appia in the past, today SS90 Napoli and Bari, in a position of respect to at least five provinces and three regions: for these reasons it is considered the gateway to Ufita and to the Campanian Region.
The property is also located in an area of considerable archaeological and historical interest, such as the Royal tratturo, some common "tratturelli" and via Herculanea, for example, that have been traced near the town of Ponte Gonnella, and the archaeological exhibits found near Camporeale.
Today the information center is open for more specific activities to promote the tourism throughout the territory, proposing local food and wine products, thanks to a large exhibition hall used for events at issue.
