Ville San Pietro (Borgomaro)

Description

Ville San Pietro is one of the seven districts of Borgomaro, in the province of Imperia, located on a ridge of Mount Moor, rich of water springs, olive groves and woods of oak and chestnut trees, wild game and mushrooms, pastures and meadows. It is divided into five villages, all between the green of the surrounding hills, which create a sort of Latin cross with a church at the center. Each district features an oratory of ancient origin. Ville San Pietro was the birthplace of famous and brilliant inventors such as: Peter Vincent Mela, a printing press maker of the XIX century, James Mary Vescine, public clock maker (like the famous one with four hearts of Mondovi) and an anonymous craftsman and designer of an illuminating system to increase the production of olive oil. The district is tied to the valley of the river Maro and shared, with other districts in the area, similar historical events: in the XVI century it belonged to the Savoy to took advantage of the strategic location on an important valley road. It was merged into the Kingdom of Sardinia after the Congress of Vienna and into the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
