Located in the Alta Murgia National Park, the first certain documents that state the existence of Toritto date back to about 1069, but the discovery of some tombs of the V and IV centuries b.C., evidence that the area was inhabited since the Peuceta period.
Among the buildings of architectural interest worth of mention: la Mother Church entitled to Saint Nicholas, built in 1410 and restored in 2000;, the Church of the Madonna della Stella, edified before 1092, and the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, built in 1789.
Other areas of the plateau are of stony calcareous geological consistence and are affected by a karst sink hole phenomena, such as the Abyss of Pulicchio di Torritto, at the Southern extremity of the territory, on the border with the town of Altamura; and the Grotto of St. Martin is North-western area, on the border with the town of Palo del Colle.
