Spiazzo

Description

Located at the center of the Rendena Valley, Spiazzo has a relatively recent administrative history, being founded only in 1928 by the merge of three existing municipalities (Borzago, Fisto and Mortaso). Its origins, however, are linked to a shrine dedicated to San Vigilio, martyred in 405, murdered in the nearby, during his last missionary journey, from the pagan population, when the bishop destroyed their worship stele dedicated to the god Saturn.
During the Middle Ages, the town submitted the domain of the Prince Bishop of Trento, who granted the local inhabitants a certain autonomy from the feudal servitude.
Present in the area are several sports facilities, such as: foot paths and mountain bike trails. Its proximity to the ski resorts of Pinzolo and Madonna di Campiglio, make this resort the ideal destination for lovers of Winter sports and trekking fans.
Sites of Interest:
- the Church of San Vigilio, named after the martyr Bishop, murdered by the pagans in 405. It features a Latin cross plan with side altars. The main altar is in Tridentine-style, with a large tabernacle surmounted by a ciborium. It is embellished with frescoes by Baschenis and Carlo Donati;
- the Town Hall, with a recently completed fresco depicting the history of Spiazzo, from the times of San Vigilio, to a contribution of local women, to the soldiers at the front;
- the Court of Tonio;
- the War Museum of the Adamello region.
