Rodengo

Description

Located on a sunny plateau in the heart of the Inn Valley, Rodengo (Rodeneck in German) is a charming village in the province of Bolzano, surrounded by an idyllic natural landscape, surrounded by mountain peaks, rolling hills, pastures and forests, a paradise for lovers by nature and long walks in the open air and oxygenating along the well-maintained footpaths. In Winter, in addition to neighbor well-equipped ski resorts, the Rodenecker is ideal for lovers of skiing.
The town's name, attested as early as 1030, has German origins but the meaning is unknown.
Nomadic herders lived in these areas since the Mesolithic, as evidenced by the discovery of flints and fragments dating back to that period. Early in the XIX century, what had been a castle began to assert itself as an independent municipality that after the First World War, came under the control of the Italian State.

Sites of Interest:
- the Castle of Rodengo, symbol of the country, which rises steeply on a gorge of the river Rienza. It was erected in 1140 by Friedrich von Rodank and is still equipped with drawbridges, battlements, towers, a courtyard, secrets, a weapon room and a chapel dedicated to St. Michael. But the main attraction of the castle is undoubtedly the fresco cycle of eleven scenes dedicated to the saga of Iwein, the circle chivalrous epic of Hartmann von Aue;
- the Romanesque Church of San Biagio in Villa, with its beautiful XVI century wooden ceiling, Baroque altar and XVII century frescoes;
- the charming Church of St. Paul, located in the hamlet with the same name, mentioned for the first time in 1341;
- the Church of St. Benedict, in the district with the same name, already mentioned in 1475, appears today with a late-Gothic style appearance. Worthy of mention: the altarpiece by Francesco Unterberger of Cavalese and the paintings of the apse;
- the Chapel at the farm Scheiber in Montano (Ahnerberg), built in 1867;
- the Church of Monte Frella in Putzer, with a little gem of folk painting of the XVII century and an altarpiece depicting the Holy Family by Christian Renzier.
