Porlezza

Description

Town in the province of Como, located on the extreme Eastern bay of Lake Lugano (or Ceresio), at the mouth of the Val Menaggio, Porlezza is a picturesque tourist town, full of important reminders of its past of great historical and artistic interest. In the Middle Ages, in fact, it was a fortified town and played a major role in the struggles that opposed Como to Milan. Dominated the town became part of the Dukedom of Milan of which it followed the same fate.
A few kilometers from the village, in the direction of Menaggio, it is possible to visit the Lake of the Plain and the Orrido di Corrido and, in the direction of Val d'Intelvi the caverns of Rescia and Orrido of Osteno.
The Church of San Vittore il Moro was built in 1634 and preserves inside a large Baroque stucco gilded altar and XVIII century frescoes by Giulio Quail Laino and wooden sculptures of great value.
The Oratory of St. Maurice Roman is an architectural jewel of the XII century. The original building was buried by a landslide in the XVII century and for centuries the only visible evidence of its existence was the bell tower. Thanks to the excavations conducted in 1966 the chapel was restored and consecrated again.
Not to miss: the Church of the Holy Mother and Saint Martin, which dates back to the XVI century, the Shrine of Our Lady of Caravita (1633) and the Romanesque church of San Michele.
