Nova Levante

Description

Nova Levante (Welschnofen in German) is a mountain town in the province of Bolzano, set at the foot of the Rosengarten massif and the Latemar one; It is a famous tourist location in South Tyrol, surrounded by thick forests that reflect themselves in the crystal clear water of the Carezza Lake (also known as Rainbow Lake).
It is the ideal tourist destination both in winter period (for the presence of the Carezza-Karersee Ski Area and the Latemar-Obereggen Ski Center) and in summer time, thanks to the interesting mountain paths, pools and golf courses.
The place name is mentioned for the first time in 1177 as "Noue" (cleared land), referring to the hard work of the local shepherds who cleared the area to make it habitable; it was under the jurisdiction of the monastery of Novacella and was inhabited by a majority ladino language population until the XVII century.
Attractions:
- the parish Church, consecrated in 1957 and flanked by a XIII century belltower, belonged to the pre-existing Church, already mentioned in 1300.
- the XVII century Church of the Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, with valuable Baroque style masterpieces;
- the Chapel of San Giuseppe, on the Moartal Alp;
- the village of Carezza with its lake.
