Monrupino

Description

Monrupino is a scattered town in the province of Trieste, set on the border with Slovenia and the international pass of Fernetti, in an area rich in karst vegetation, where it is possible to admire a stunning view both of the Gulf of Trieste and the nearby Slovenia's towns.
The remains of a prehistoric fort (the so-called stronghold of Monrupino) reveal the ancient origins of the town. During the Saracen invasions of the XVI century, the inhabitants of Monrupino built a defensive wall that, later, took the name of "tabor" (from the Slavic "fortified place").
Attractions:
- the stronghold of Monrupino, located on a strategic hill, was, during the centuries, a prehistoric fort, a Roman castrum and a fortified place during the Barbarian invasions;
- the XVI century Church of Beata Vergine Assunta, Marian shrine built on the ruins of an earlier XI century church;
- the natural reserves of Monte Orsario and Monte Lanaro;
- the so called Karst House, a typical residence with traditional costumes and agricultural tools and where the Carsic Marriage takes place in August, every two years.
