Mascalucia
Description
Mascalucia, famous especially for the handicraft activity based on handmade woollen carpets, wrought iron and lava-stone objects, was rebuilt after the dramatic eruption in 1669 and the earthquake in 1818.
The most relevant monuments are the Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate erected in the XIV century, the Chiesa Madre and its portal made of local lava-stone, and the Chiesa di S. Vito preserving a splendid painting by Gaetano Rapisardi (XIX century). Extremely interesting from an architectural point of view are the liberty style Palazzo Cirelli, and the so-called "Torre del Grifo" (the Tower of the Snout), of the Middle Age era.
