Falerna
Description
Town in the province of Catanzaro, situated on a panoramic hill at short distance from the Tyrrhenian coast, Falerna is located in an area inhabited since the Ages of Magna Greece and the Roman Imperial times, as evidenced by numerous finds unearthed during the excavations made in the seventies and eighties of the XX century. The town, however, is mentioned for the first time in a Summary of the Vatican, dated 1606.
From the marina, during a clear day the view extends from the Etna to the Aeolian Islands.
Sites of Interest:
- the remains of a Roman villa of the II century A.D., around which has been built an Archaeological Park;
- the remains of a XV century fortress;
- the remains of a XV century monastery;
- the XVIII century church of St. Thomas d'Aquino, which features a single nave with side chapels and a transept. The elegant façade features a fine portal;
- the Church of the Holy Rosary, which preserves inside a beautiful XIX century painting depicting the Madonna del Rosario.
