Cirò Marina

Description

District of the town of Cirò, Cirò Marina became municipality in 1952. Located in the province of Crotone, it is a beautiful resort overlooking the Ionian Sea, surrounded by lush vegetation of olive trees, vines and citrus. Today it features a mix of newly built residences integrated between others of ancient origins.
Sites of Interest:
- the remains of the Sanctuary of Apollo Aleo, brought to light by the archaeologist Paolo Orsi in 1921;
- the Sabatini Castle, built for military purposes in the XV century by Carafa, Marquis of Cirò, and therefore also known as Castle Carafa. It features a square plan with corner towers;
- the Saracen markets, formed by two rows of stone arches that once were used as deposits for the goods. In a matter of facts, the feudal princes of Tarsia, relying on an XVIII century religious benefit, obtained permission to present a fair, every year, in the seaside district of Madonna di Mare;
- the New Tower and the Old Tower, watch towers built to defend the area from the Saracen raids, that were important elements of the entire defense system of the coast;
- the Monastery of Our Lady of the Sea, located not far from Saracen markets, which according to the traditions were founded by St. Peter, on his journey from Antioch to Rome, on the ruins of a pagan temple;
- the several noble palaces and residences (Palazzo Porti, Palazzo Siciliani, Palazzo Caparra).
