Description

Bazzano is a town in the province of Bologna, situated in the foothills bordering the province of Modena, washed by the waters of the river Samoggia. The area was inhabited since ancient times, as attested by finds of Prehistoric times, which now are on display in the Museum Crespellani. At first it was an Etruscan settlement, subsequently it was conquered by the Romans and in the early Middle Ages it was ceded to the Abbey of Nonantola, that due to its desirable location, had a "castrum" built to protect the territories.
Landmark is undoubtedly the Fortress of Bentivoglio, also known as Rocca Matildea, entitled to its first owner Matilda of Canossa. However, the current shape is the result of intense series of renovation works dating from the XV century by Giovanni II Bentivoglio. In 1799, with the false name of Lorenzo Alighieri, alias Ugo Foscolo was imprisoned here. It still preserves several beautiful frescoed halls and today it is home to cultural events, a Media Library and the Museum Crespellani.
Among the religious buildings, not to miss: the Baroque Church of Our Lady of Suffrage and the Church of St. Francis, restored in the XVIII century.
