Annone Veneto

Description

The town's name derives from the Latin "ad nonum," referring to the distance from town centre of Concordia Sagittaria (ad nonum lapidem). Municipality in the province of Venice, located near the left bank of the river Livenza, the point of contact between the provinces of Pordenone, Treviso and Venice, the territories of Annone Veneto on the border with Friuli Venezia Giulia. The local economy is mainly based on agricultural activities: a major income derives from the cultivation of vines, thanks to the particular soil composition, ideal components for the producing of wines of great value. Also important are the industrial and craftsman activities.
The first settlement dates back to Roman times, when it was a carriage stop along the ancient via Postumia. The presence of important roads, built by the Romans for military purposes, was a key impetus for the development and extension of traffic of people and goods and gave way to the economic growth of the town. The territory was divided into centuries and Annone became part of the agro of Julia Concordia. The barbarian invasions caused a period of decline and the area submitted the domain of several populations: Marcomanni, Quadi, Germans, Goths, Huns, Alani, Ostrogoths, Heruli, Byzantines. Subsequently famines, epidemics and floods decimated and impoverished populations and territory. In 568 the Lombards forced the Byzantines to retreat and founded the Lombard Duchy of Friuli. Later it was ruled by the Franks and by the Patriarch of Aquileia, while in the XV century the lands were assigned to the Serenissima Republic of Venice. The following history is common to the other localities of the entire province.

Attractions:
- the old Parish Church of 1763, features a very simple façade. Only a circular rose window interrupts the linearity. It is surmounted by a pediment and presents two aisles. The XV century bell tower, located at the rear, was built on the foundations of a previously built tower. It features a sturdy and square base and is surmounted by a tall spire. The church contains a XVI century altar attributed to Rinaldo of Portogruaro, the XVIII century altarpiece of Santa Fosca, a XV century stone basin and a valuable XVI century fresco;
- the new Church of San Vitale, recently built, has an original form similar to a tent. The property is surrounded by a large park and features a semicircular structure and strangely the altar is located on a lower level than the one for the general public;
- the XV century Church of St. Nicholas;
- the Church of Our Lady of Health;
- the Church of San Pietro in Spadacenta;
- the Church of San Luigi in Belvedere;
- the Church of San Giuseppe in Giai;
- the rural Casa Gianotto which presents a series of XVI century frescoes that decorate the interior of the porch;
- the XVI century Villa Polvara in Spadacenta.
